Plan the perfect family picnic with these clever DIY tips

9 June 2016

A picnic is a lovely way to spend time connecting with your family. It’s also a great way to relax and enjoy a meal together. Pick a beautiful outdoor space, gather the necessary goods, food (and don’t forget the kids!), and enjoy quality time in the open air.

USE THE FOLLOWING TIPS TO GET YOUR PICNIC SORTED:

1. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

Think carefully about where you will hold your picnic. Once you’ve chosen the venue, ask yourself what you’ll need to make it suitable for eating and playing together as a family. Do you need to pack a picnic blanket, umbrella, or a table or two?

2. THE GUEST LIST

Take note of the number of people attending your picnic, as well as their various ages. This will help you to decide on the type of food you are serving, as well as how much you will need. Taking grandparents along? Make sure they will be comfortably seated. Small children? They’ll need to be entertained with toys and games in a safe space.

3. THE MENU

Make your food before you go and choose items that are easy to serve and handle e.g. sandwiches, whole fruits, and biscuits. Remember – no mess, no fuss. Also, go for snacks that can be served cold so you don’t have to worry about having to keep anything warm or heat it up. Pack all your food in easy-to-handle and transport plastic containers and crates. Avoid glass items as they can break and are heavy to carry. And don’t forget the picnic basket!

4. REMEMBER THE LITTLE EXTRAS

Think about the basics you need to serve and eat a meal at home. Plates, utensils (e.g. butter and bread knifes), condiments, serviettes, cups, bin bag etc. Stick with paper and plastic wherever you can – this will make for easier cleaning and less chance of breakages. And bring along some outdoor essentials as well – such as a change of clothes for the kids, sunscreen, wet wipes, and hats.

5. PLAN SOME FUN FOR THE DAY

While it’s nice to sit and relax with your family, children in particular might get bored. Plan some fun physical activities such as soccer or paper crafts and bring along extra toys to make sure everyone has a fun time. If they’re plastic, light to carry, and easy to clean even better!

Picnic? Outdoor party? Lunch in the garden? Plastic makes any outdoor event so much easier and more fun!
