How to take your outdoor picnic to the next level

14 March 2017

Picnics are a go-to favourite amongst so many people! They’re easy to plan and execute, and bring people together without worrying about space (or a shortage of delicious food!). Take advantage of the Autumn weather and plan an epic outdoor picnic to trump all others!

HERE’S HOW YOU CAN GET YOUR EPIC OUTDOOR PICNIC

1. THE BASKET

It may seem obvious, but you need the right food carrier to keep things simple at your next picnic. Plastic packets and brown bags mean that all your carefully packed snacks are sitting in quite an unstable environment, whisked from side to side as you walk. To keep everything separate and safe, a picnic basket is key. They’re also easy to carry and can hold much more than the humble plastic packet.

2. PACK CLEVERLY

Make sure you have a wide range of Tupperware and jar sizes to store all your little snacks in. It’s such a waste of space to use a large Tupperware for something small, like olives or nuts, and you end up running out of space very quickly. If you have some very tiny Tupperwares, you can slide them into the gaps between the other ones in the basket, and make the most of the space. More food for everyone!

3. KEEP THINGS TRENDY (AND ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY!)

Use jars. It’s a great way to showcase a ‘country-style’ serving option while also maximizing on space. Layer your salad in a large jar and once you arrive, add the dressing and shake it up before serving. No-bake desserts (like cheesecakes and mousses) are also perfect to serve out of a few tiny jars. This way, everyone also gets his or her own little jar and no one gets left without.

4. PACK A CUTTING BOARD AND SHARP KNIFE

There’s nothing worse than having all your snacks ready and packed, but no way of preparing them to be shared. Pack some baby wipes or a dishcloth too, so your board can be wiped clean before you leave.

5. GO THE EXTRA MILE

If you’re concerned about drinks spilling or food getting messy, pack a small foldable table that you can put the cutting board, cups and juice on. People can pour their drinks and prepare their food at the table, keeping the blanket clean as a whistle!

6. CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF

Don’t forget to pack a few plastic packets to dispose of your food scraps, cups and serviettes. Make sure you leave the place like you found it, so the next group of happy people can enjoy it as much as you did. Most picnic spots, like beaches or parks, will have a bin as you exit, so none of it travels home with you either.

Taking note of all these little tips will ensure your picnic is seamless and fuss-free. At Household Plastic, we’ve got everything you need in one place. Stop by and pick up your perfect picnic essentials, we guarantee it’ll be the easiest picnic you’ve ever hosted!
