How to Cook and Peel a Perfect Hard Boiled Egg

27 August 2017

One thing we all need to know, – how to cook and peel a perfect hard boiled egg. Most of us eat eggs, that is if we aren’t vegan or have some kind of intolerance.

But believe it or not, eggs and the way they are prepared are disputed territory. Everyone has their own ideas about how to cook, boil or fry an egg.

Hard Boiled Eggs are Picnic Food

OK, so let’s look at hard boiled eggs seeing that it is spring and we are planning picnics – especially with #braaiday coming up.

So here is one way to make great hard boiled eggs:

  • Place your eggs in a pot and cover with cold water by 1 inch.
  • Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then cover.
  • Remove from the heat and set aside 8 to 10 minutes.
  • Drain, pop into in ice water and peel.

Don’t Use Fresh Eggs

The method above is one way to make perfect hard boiled eggs – I use another way, the way my mother taught me.

I first get the pot boiling. And then carefully deposit the eggs into the pot, one by one on a spoon.

The trick with hard boiled eggs is to get them just right so you can remove the shells without destroying or damaging the egg.

The time is about 11 – 13 minutes depending on the size and the freshness of the eggs. The best eggs for boiling are at least a week to 10 days old. Don’t use fresh eggs.

(Refrigerated hard boiled eggs will not peel well. Peel your eggs once they’ve cooled down to room temperature.)

You know that if there is a blue/green ring around the yolk, the egg is overcooked?

Perfectly cooked hard boiled eggs aren’t difficult — and, when you do it right, not only do you have an exquisitely yellow center but you also have a hard boiled egg that is easy to peel.

After cooking, let the eggs rest in an ice-bath to “shock” them.

How Martha Stewart Makes Perfect Hard Boiled Eggs

Let’s see what Martha Stewart advises:

Place eggs in a large saucepan. Cover them with cool water by 1 inch. Slowly bring water to a boil over medium heat; when the water has reached a boil, cover and remove from heat. Let sit 12 minutes.

Transfer eggs to a colander; place under cool running water to stop the cooking. Eggs can be peeled and served immediately.

So, now you know how to prepare perfect hard boiled eggs, but if you want egg cups, egg slicers, egg storage containers, egg beaters, egg boxes, egg cookers, egg rings and all other things related to eggs, pop into one of Household Plastic’s four stores in Durban. You will find everything you need, right there.
