It is a fact, when you declutter your home, you will have a more peaceful life.
A general definition for the word “declutter”, is to remove unnecessary items from (an untidy or overcrowded place).
Some people are neat freaks with their spice rack packed in alphabetical order and the clothes in their wardrobes colour coded. Others are hoarders who become obsessed with collecting and holding on to anything, like magazines and newspapers, bits of junk and an ever growing mess of unwanted objects.
Most of us are somewhere in between, ranging from tidy to messy.
Mess Causes Stress
But bills and junk mail are piling up on your kitchen counter, dirty clothes are spilling out of the hamper onto your bedroom floor, kids’ toys (and socks) are everywhere and let’s not even talk about the state of your spare room right now.
Even if you don’t realize it, this chaos in your home can mess with your mental health. Every task, from eating breakfast to driving to work can feel complicated by the mess you are dealing with.
It is true that even for those of us who prefer their homes to be free of clutter, some messiness creeps in. It usually reaches breaking point on a stressful and rushed day when you look at the extra boxes, magazines, papers, kids toys and bits and pieces all over the house and you decide – this is enough!
Many people begin to feel overwhelmed, anxious, and defeated around the idea of decluttering their homes. But take heart. The decluttering journey doesn’t need to be as painful as some make it out to be.

Whether you tackle it as part of a downsizing effort or simply to simplify your life, decluttering an entire home is a big job. The best way to tackle it is in stages—to focus on one room, one space, or even one zone within a room completing the job fully before moving on to the next space. This will also build confidence as you experience visible success at each step.

- Designate a spot for incoming papers. Papers often account for a lot of our clutter.
- Start clearing a starting zone.
- Clear off a counter.
- Pick a shelf.
- Schedule a decluttering weekend.
- Pick up 5 things, and find places for them.
- Get rid of obvious rubbish.
- If you haven’t got the heart to get rid of something, pack neatly in storage containers.
